Clearfield PA Elks Lodge #540 ,
29th Annual High Country Arts Fair, July 9, 2017
In partnership with clearfieldreunions.com . . .
Since 1989 the Clearfield PA Elks Lodge has presented their High Country Arts Fair in cooperation
with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation & Natural Resources, the administrator of S.B. Elliott
State Park at Penfield PA. Because the Fair is held on publicly owned land the proceeds must all go
toward supporting charitable and non-profit organizations in our area.

Several such organizations do their part in helping the Elks with the Fair each year and about two dozen
are presented a distribution of the proceeds at a dinner held each October at the Clearfield Lodge.
Scroll down the page for a list of the benifiting associations.
Our guests are greeted by and pay their Chicken Dinner money to John Troxell while PER Gus Yeager helps out.
Gus claims that he is barred by lodge rules from handling any of the money - just like at home.
Admission to the grounds, browsing the many vendors and enjoying the entertainment is all free of charge.

from the Clearfield Elks High Country Arts Fair this year ~
The Clearfield Elks would also like to thank the many local companies
that graciously provide manpower and in-kind donations.
Left above, looks like a momentary lull for Bill and Harold in the Chicken Line. The Barbecued Chicken
Dinners are the signature item each year but other equally yummy entrees are also offered.

Above right, guests wait patiently in line at the Hot Sausage booth.Like all of the food stands at the Fair, these
booths are staffed by member Elks, their spouses, their kids and other community minded area residents.
Throughout the afternoon, entertainment was provided  by the always popular Moore Brothers .  .  .  .

Some 150 Craft Vendors and Artists also take part in the Fair and help attract the always large crowds ~

And a look from the other side; examples of  the "help"as they prepare and serve the many mouth
watering treats. The Home Made Pie Stand, shown below left prompts an interesting story. Each year
as the event approaches the word goes out around the lodge that for those with the knack that it will soon be
time to fire-up the ovens; all the pies are home-made and donated by Elk members and spouses. A few years
back one of our lodge ladies responded to a degree that all agreed was "above and beyond the call of duty" -
she baked for us thirty-one ( 31 ! ) pies.  While all others marveled at her output, her response was that
she "just likes to bake." We prefer to think it's more than that; Elks respond to the call when needed -

This year with the assistance of visitclearfieldcounty.org we were able to greatly expand our
pre-event publicity and we also had near all-day live remotes courtesy of Du Bois'
Bigfoot Country Radio.
And we were once again happy to be able to provide Trolley Rides to and from the parking lots.
Just getting from the highway to the parking lots was no easy chore either; at one
point traffic was backed up clear out to I-80, just shy of two miles.

A couple of reminders of the Park's early days; a one-time rental cabin and a freestone fireplace.
Both would have been constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930's.
One of the tractors displayed by the Susquehanna
Antique Machinery Assn. which also serves the
wonderful home-made ice cream on the grounds.
Some the Lodge "big-wigs":

Another view of the "Chicken Line",
a bit busier this time.
Every year the CHS Swim & Dive Team helps out by
selling cold drinks throughout the park.
Thanks Kids !
